Magic Carpet Ride to Israel

You might have seen this from another Tribe posting. If so, thanks for stopping by again...

Time for a new adventure. Like all of my past ones there will be drumming, teaching, learning and meeting incredibly talented and creative people. I'm off for Israel in May for two-weeks.

I work for Port Discovery Children's Museum, located in the heart of Baltimore's Inner Harbor district. Since last fall, I have been working with two classes of fourth graders: one is located in Columbia MD and the other is in the Central Arava region of south-central Israel. They have been collaborating together as part of a story-creating, storyboarding and storytelling project that builds on descriptive & narrative writing exercises that targets their visual interpretation skills. Just another way of integrating the arts to teach core classroom curriculum.

No trip would be complete without a heavy dose of drumming. I'm taking one drum: a 20" Cooperman bodhran. It has been a regular travel companion of mine for the past several years. The TKL backpack case is quite superb. My only reservation has to do with whether it will fit in the overhead compartment. I'm flying EL AL out of JFK. Their fleet standard for the flight to Tel Aviv is a 747-400. Don't know much about that plane, but I will find out.

While there I will be working with the 4th graders on how to perform Kamishibai, which is a traditional Japanese storytelling art form that dates to 12th century monks. I refer to it as PowerPoint 11 A.D. So as not to miss out on an opportunity when drumming I am planning on taking a hand-held Digital Recorder. Does anyone have any suggestions? The one that I am looking at is the M-Audio Micro Track II Portable Digital Recorder.

My ideas are evolving exponentially. I get to have my own "Willy Wonka" moments, too. This is fun!!! If I can figure out all of the details of blogging, posting pics and video, podcasting, etc, I will share some of my trip with you all, if anyone is interested.

If anyone wishes to be included in my adventure, please email me directly at kamishibai.project@gmail.com. I'll be leading a Kamishibai storytelling workshop for all of the participating Israeli students and teachers, plus visiting the Israel Children's Museum in Holon, as well as Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. If you have friends and contacts (musicians, dancers, artists, etc) in Israel and would be willing to make introductions I would be grateful and ask that you write me directly.

Thanks for your kind attention. From time to time, I have to go somewhere that I have never been and speak music with people whose spoken tongue I do not understand. However, I am very comfortable speaking the language of rhythm and melody. It's often times much easier to express myself speaking that language than English.

Well, that's enough for now....

Shalom...Daveed

There is an interesting discussion in the UNMATA tribe regarding a GLBT belly dance tour. One of the threads indicated there is new tribe for GLBT belly dancers called GLOW Raqs, with GLOW meaning Gay, Lesbian, or Whoever.

Drum in the Pride Parade!

A dozen or so bellydancers will march in the 2007 Pride Parade in downtown Seattle, and we need percussionists to set our hips in motion! Do you have a drum you can walk with? You'll need to commit to two rehearsals (Saturday or Sunday midday on Capitol Hill) in June and then the parade itself on the morning of Saturday, June 24 downtown. Must be familiar with the most common Middle Eastern rhythms. Potential prize winnings will be split evenly among all participants. This will be a good networking opportunity for future dancer/drummer collaborations. Please contact Amy at amykatehorn@gmail.com if you want to parade with us.

THANK YOU - Open Dance Night in Chandler

I'd like to say thank you to all the fantastic musicians that came out to play for us last night Marceau, Dionisio and their crew did a fabulous job of providing music that made it hard to sit down! Abdou Abdullah on the oud was a wonderful addition to their ensemble.

Thank you also to our guest dancers: Rukshana, troupe Artemis under Gazelle's direction, Makara, and Zina. All of you had lovely performances, very enthusiastically received by the crowd.

Every seat was full, many were left to stand and more were turned away at the door because it was so full. Our musicians were in some tight quarters but were very gracious about it. I cannot thank you all enough for bringing your art and good energy to the evening. It would not have been half as much fun without you all! We hope to see you all again next month.... date and (larger) location to be announced!

It's Just No Fun If The Drummers Don't Come!

Wednesday, Jan. 18th we'll be having an Open Dance Night at Tina's Ethiopian Cafe, 479 N. Arizona Ave. in Chandler, 7:00-9:30 pm. We would love to have any and all musicians come and join the fun! As a thank you, dinner will be provided for musicians if you call or e-mail me ahead of time to be put on the list.

All dancers are welcome - cabaret, tribal or fusion. The performance slots are full - we will have solos by Makara, Azula, Zina, Athene, Rukshana, Shirley (of Shirley's Delhi) and Gazelle's troupe. There is still plenty of time for open floor dancing so come and make some new dance friends!

Dancer and Drummer Jokes

I can't think of any jokes, but a while back I was watching the old BBC Miniseries "I, Claudius", and in one of the later episodes, there is an oriental dancer (although she's wearing a bedleh and performing with a veil, and it's set in ancient Rome. Go figure...) But the emperor and the other guy watching are talking about the dancer, and one of them says, "She'll make a man very lucky someday!" and the other says, "Oh, she's married to the drummer."

And I thought: my goodness! This has been going on for ages!
